Short answer: most public universities in Germany charge little or no tuition for international students, but you must still show living funds in a blocked account, obtain an APS certificate (for Indian applicants) and apply in time for the Winter (October) or Summer (April) intake.
Tuition and semester fees
Many public universities charge only a semester contribution (roughly EUR 150–350). Some states, such as Baden-Württemberg, charge non-EU students tuition. Private universities usually charge EUR 5,000–20,000+ per year. Always check the programme page.
Intakes and deadlines
Winter intake starts around September–October and Summer around March–April. Application windows can close 4–8 months earlier, so start early.
What is APS?
The Akademische Prüfstelle (APS) verifies academic documents of Indian applicants. Most universities and the visa process require the APS certificate, so apply for it as soon as your shortlist is clear.
Blocked account
The student visa requires proof of funds, commonly through a blocked account of roughly EUR 11,900 or more per year. Confirm the exact amount on the German mission or DAAD website before depositing.
Language requirements
English-taught programmes usually need IELTS/TOEFL; German-taught programmes need German (B2/C1). See our Germany country guide for work rules and post-study options, or book a counselling session.
